CMD Verse is a digital universe designed to help Communication & Multimedia Design students explore their identity within the field and preserve their projects in a meaningful way. Student work often disappears after delivery, reducing its educational, reflective, and emotional value. CMD Verse addresses this by offering a shared space where projects remain accessible and continue to inspire others.
Within this environment students meet B.O.B., the world adapting robot that travels with the player through all six unique worlds: User Experience, Media, Spatial & Sensorial, Creative Technology, Social, and Discursive. Each of these reflecting a core design pillar of CMD Breda. By wandering through these worlds visitors discover work from previous cohorts in an informal and playful manner. It serves as an evolving representation of the program’s values and the uniqueness of its students.
Together with Luka van Opstal, Luuk Roovers, and Ralph Smits, we created a platform where CMD students can immortalize their work while inviting others to explore and learn from it. CMD Verse is presented as a physical arcade-style installation in the medialab, ensuring it is both visible and approachable. This recognizable artifact forms a gateway into the digital universe behind it.
Students upload projects they are proud of through cmdverse.nl, after which these works appear inside the game. This input–output system allows creators to gain recognition for their efforts while giving visitors a clear path to inspiration. Because students can continuously add new work, the world expands autonomously and remains a living, growing expression of the CMD identity.
CMD Verse was developed as an interactive 3D data-commons where students can archive, discover, and showcase their projects. It acts as an alternative portfolio system that highlights not only individual creations but also the collective progress of the program over time. The concept was shaped through research into motivation, pride, visibility, and barriers to sharing work. We interviewed students, tested prototypes, and refined these insights into a fully functioning 3D environment with both upload and visualization systems. By designing for low friction and high autonomy, the platform sustains itself: students contribute voluntarily, supporting a continuous and collaborative archive culture within CMD Verse.
My contribution with in the project is largely focused on concept development and character design. Helped define the visual direction of the project and ensure a cohesive artistic style across the different elements of the world. I valued the way this consistency strengthened the experience as a whole.
In addition, I was responsible for the original sound design, which included creating custom soundtrack and producing all foley sound effects. This contributed to a distinctive atmosphere that supported the interactive and exploratory nature of CMD Verse.
Some of the core concepts were produced in the early stages of the project when the world was first set to include for core pillars. Now with the expansion of 2 more the the concepts under "Textures" and "Canvas" were made.
